Introduction
This article will help you find and save relevant logs for troubleshooting Opticstudio crashes, graphics issues or license issues. This replaces the Zemax file collector which was removed due to privacy concerns in 2025. You are welcome to remove specific company information such as computer names if you wish for these.
If you are experiencing crashes, then support only needs parts 1-3. If you are having troubles acquiring or maintaining a license connection, then see part 4.
These logs can be sent to support by opening a ticket on the Ansys Customer Support space.
1 - Windows event logs
Search for and open Windows Event Viewer. Navigate to Windows Logs → Application.
Look for Error events that mention Opticstudio.exe . Select the events you want to save. Right-click one or multiple items (with Ctrl). Select "Save Selected Events". Use the Text (tab-delimited) option and name it opticstudio error or something similar.
2 - Graphics information
Within OpticStudio, open Help > System Diagnostics. Click Save output. This will create a text file you can send support.
3 - System information
Search for and open System Information. Click File > Export and save the text file.
4 - Licensing logs
This is only needed if you are having license issues like being unable to connect to a license server or maintain a connection, or cannot acquire the edition of OpticStudio you are licensed for.
If OpticStudio opens, you can go to Help > License Utility > and click "view logs" top open the license log folder.
If you cannot launch OpticStudio, you can open Windows Explorer, Type %temp%\.ansys into the address bar and hit the Enter key. There should be a file(s) with OpticStudio in the name. These are the ones you want as well as the contents of the LIcensingsettingsUtility folder.
4a - Ansys Licensing Settings logs
The Ansys Licensing Settings application that is bundled with OpticStudio is where you should be configuring access to your license (as of 2025 R1). It offers some helpful diagnostics to see what you are connecting to and some system information. A shortcut to this is in the "Ansys OpticStudio" folder or "Ansys Inc" folder in your Windows start menu.
Click Diagnostics and click Generate. You can select the results in the Console with your mouse. Copy and paste this into a text file or Word document.
It is also helpful to take screenshots of the License Servers and Products section to verify your settings.
