When using the FDE solver, the first step in the standard workflow is to setup the simulation.
This includes creating the materials needed in the simulation, if the material data isn’t
already available from the default material database.
Once the materials are defined, the structures and the FDE simulation region are setup.
The simulation region is where the boundary conditions and the mesh are set.
Clicking the “run” button will switch MODE Solutions to analysis mode and open the
“Eigensolver” Analysis window.
The simulation settings (structure, FDE area) cannot be modified when in analysis mode.
When the solver runs, it will first mesh the structure, then calculate the modes that can
propagate in the structure.
Finding the modes may require tweaking some of the solver’s parameters.
A number of practical tips will be provided in the “Running the mode solver” section
of the course.
Additional analysis options are available: modal analysis, frequency analysis and overlap
analysis.
The frequency and overlap analysis will be covered in detail in the Analyzing simulation
results section.
The simulation process is typically iterative, meaning you will switch back to layout mode
to adjust the model parameters and then re-run the simulation many times before finding the
optimal design.
The built-in parameter sweep and optimization tool can also be used to help automate this
process.
More information on each workflow step will be provided in later sections of the course.
In this section, we will focus on a simple SOI rib waveguide as an introduction.
Before starting on setting up the simulation, it’s useful to familiarize yourself with
MODE Solutions graphical layout editor, which will be covered next.
