Consider the Silicon On Insulator (or SOI) rib waveguide illustrated here.
Such waveguide is commonly used in Photonic Integrated Circuit applications.
This silicon waveguide is 500nm by 220nm, with a glass cladding.
We will use the Finite Difference Eigenmode (or FDE) solver to analyze this device on
a wavelength range from 1500nm to 1600nm.
More specifically, we are interested in the fundamental TE mode and properties such as
the mode profile, effective index and dispersion.
In this section of the course, we will discuss when to use the FDE solver, and we will demonstrate
how to set up, run and collect the results from an FDE simulation.
