Before going into the details of how we can view and collect simulation results, it's
useful to first understand the different forms of data, or variable types, that are available,
and the types of data that are returned by monitors.
Data can be stored in different forms, and the different data types available are listed
on this slide.
They include strings which contain text, matrices which can include a single number, array,
or multi-dimensional matrix of numbers, cells and structs which are arrays of elements where
each element can contain any data type, or datasets.
Datasets are objects that contain data packaged together with associated parameters.
There are three different types of datasets, matrix, rectilinear spatial, and unstructured
spatial datasets and this will be covered in more detail in the following Datasets unit.
Each data type has an associated icon so that in the Result View window or Script Workspace
window of the CAD, the data type of the variables listed can be identified by looking at their
In FDTD Solutions, the data from monitors will typically be returned in the form of strings
(for example the name of a monitor), matrices (for example the x span of a monitor), matrix
datasets (for example transmission as a function of frequency), and rectilinear spatial datasets
(for example the refractive index profile as a function of space and frequency).
